INGLIS, Lily, Former member - Died peacefully surrounded by family and friends on Monday, January 11, 2010 from complications due to cancer. Lily was born in Milan, Italy on October 11, 1926. While as a university student of architecture in London, she met Jimmy to whom she was married for 45 years. In 1957, Lily and Jimmy moved to Kingston where Lily became well known as an architect committed to, and preserving the heritage and fabric of the city through her involvement in a variety of community groups. Her architectural accomplishments include projects such as the Kingston Public Library, Chez Piggy, the Brew Pub and the Wolf Island ferry terminal, as well as many other recognizable Kingston landmarks. Her architectural designs and community activism have been recognized by numerous awards and honours. Lily will be remembered for her dedication to her family and friends, as well as for her social activism targeting the needs of children and the homeless.
Lily was predeceased by Jimmy in 1999 and will be greatly missed by her daughters Jane and Kate (predeceased by her partner Dave), son-in-law Neil and grandchildren Lindsay and Jamie as well as the large extended community of friends and colleagues. Jane and Kate would like to extend their very sincere gratitude to Dr. Karen Hall-Barber for her compassionate care and tireless support, to Lori for her dedication to Lily and to all those who assisted Mom in her journey. Lily's family will receive friends at CHALMERS UNITED CHURCH (212 Barrie Street, Kingston, Ontario at Clergy and Earl Streets) on Friday January 15th, between the hours of 5 pm - 8 pm. A memorial service in celebration of her life will take place in the Church Sanctuary on Saturday, January 16th at 1 pm, officiated by Reverend Dr. Steven Chambers. Immediately following the service, everyone is invited to McCallum Hall for a time of remembrance and refreshment.
For many years, Lily could be found at public meetings with politicians of all stripes decrying the need for more effort towards building affordable housing. She was passionate and clear in communicating her thoughts on this topic and she was a champion for trying to assist the less fortunate and homeless members of our community. Lily was a proud supporter of the work of Kingston Home Base Housing and the housing and services which it has put in place over the years. Lily's family has requested that donations, in lieu of flowers, be directed to the programs at Home Base Housing, 417 Bagot Street, Kingston, ON K7K 3C1. Charitable receipts will be issued to donors.
