Architecture Education Resource Guide
Grades 9 to 12
The secondary school curriculum offers students a broad range of opportunities to integrate architectural learning into many subjects including:
Arts:
Visual Arts: In the secondary grades, students will further study the elements and principles of design and will work with a variety of materials, processes, techniques and styles. Students will be required to apply an understanding of the elements and principles of design to personal, historical, and contemporary artworks, demonstrate an understanding of career options in the visual arts, differentiate historical artworks by content, theme, style, techniques, and materials, and describe the impact of art practices and materials on the environment.
Mathematics:
Geometry, calculus
Mathematics will cover a range of applications specific to architecture in grades 9-12 including, problem solving, geometry and calculus.
Social Sciences and Humanities:
Fashion, Challenges and Changes in Society, Fashion and Creative expression.
Science:
Physics
Technological Education:
Communications Technology, Construction Technology, Technological Design, Computer Engineering

Career Studies
Learning Activities
Activity: Our Architectural Heritage
Subject: Art/Social Sciences and Humanities/Mathematics/Career Education
Objectives: Students will demonstrate an awareness of historical architectural characteristics and analyze building styles and materials in regard to geographical location.
The Project:
1. Sketch, identify and describe 3 examples of the following:
- Decorative concrete or brick cornices
- Decorative brickwork surrounding windows
- Engraved Cornerstone
2. Part 1: Using words, sketches, magazines or photographs, describe two of the following:
- Spanish architectural style
- Tudor architectural style
- Victorian architectural style
- Alpine (Swiss) architectural style
- Other
Part 2: Give your opinion of the influence of the geographical location (weather, available materials, etc.) on housing styles.
Additional activities:
- Invite a guest speaker (architect or someone from the local heritage society) to speak on local historical structures,
- Go on a guided walking tour of local historical buildings.
