WORK EXPERIENCE RECORD BOOK
Becoming a Licensed Technologist OAA requires candidates to document and submit work experience hours to the OAAAS.
WORK EXPERIENCE GUIDELINES
The work experience record books are an essential part of your OAAAS program. If you have any questions about them, or if you are unable to submit one by your deadline date, please contact Rommy Rodriguez A., rrodriguez@oacett.org or 416-621-9621 ext. 265.

Instructions For Experience Record Book
Categories and Experience Areas
All OAAAS members (except those who are Licensed Technologists OAA) must complete and submit work experience record books for each 1,000 hours you work, as well as when you change employers. Each report must be signed and initialed by your supervising architect and sent to OAAAS to the attention of Rommy Rodriguez A., Administrator, no later than eight weeks following the end of the reporting period. If you don’t file your work experience record book on time, a late submission charge will apply.
The only exception to this rule is for new members. Individuals who join OAAAS are permitted to file retroactive hours, providing the work is certified by an architect and is submitted within three months of joining. Some new members can document significant prior experience and thus move well along the path. This special rule applies in the following circumstances:
- A recent graduate who is just embarking on a career must join OACETT and work for two years before joining OAAAS. Work experience gained during the qualification period can be credited against the OAAAS requirement providing it is properly certified and filed within three months of joining OAAAS.
- If you have two years’ or more work experience in Ontario (or other Canadian province), which is certified by an architect, this can be submitted when you join OACETT/OAAAS.
- If you have work experience from another country, contact us to see if we will be able to give you some credit for this work.
CONTINUING EDUCATION
Members who hold the designation Technologist OAAAS or Licensed Technologist OAA must meet continuing education requirements as set out in the OAA Continuing Education Program. Members of OAAAS must obtain the following in the two-year cycle, which commences on January 1, 2010:
Technologist OAAAS - 15 hours of learning (11 hours are self-directed and four hours are core learning)
Licensed Technologist OAA - 35 hours of learning (28 hours are self-directed and seven hours are core learning)
Self-directed learning includes courses or private study “related to” the profession. The OAA Core Learning Program comprises courses offered by one of the architects’ associations, or courses offered by Ontario universities. You will find all the details under the Continuing Education on the OAA web site. Remember, members of OAAS are required to complete a pro-rated portion of the hours required required by architects. Each issue of the OAA e-bulletin contains information about upcoming core learning opportunities.
Your Continuing Education requirements may change if your membership category changes during the two-year cycle. If your category changes within the first six months of the cycle, you will be required to accumulate all of the relevant core and self-directed learning hours. If your category changes in the subsequent 12-month period, you will need to record one-half of the normal hours for that cycle.
- If your category changes in the last six months of the cycle, your requirement is based on your previous category as follows:if you move from Associate to Technologist between July 1, 2011 and December 31, 2011, you will not require any hours in the two-year cycle which commences on January 1, 2010
- If you move from Technologist to Licensed Technologist OAA, you must complete the hours for the Technologist category in the two-year cycle which commences on January 1, 2010.
The Licensed Technologist OAA is responsible for one-half the number of hours of an architect in the province. This is important because there are maximum numbers of hours that can be claimed for various activities. The following charts provide further details:
CORE Activities Allocation Chart
Self-Directed Activities Allocation Chart
If you look at the OAA chart for self-directed hours you will see that it outlines the maximum number of hours (out of a total of 56 self-directed hours) that an architect can claim in each category. OAAAS members may claim a pro-rated maximum number of hours based on this chart, as well as the one for CORE hours. As an example, activities undertaken by members on behalf of OAAAS (Board, committees, representations, etc) fall in the category of Committee Meetings, in which a Licensed Technologist OAA may thus claim a maximum of 12.5 hours and a Technologist OAAAS may claim a maximum of 6 hours.
Individuals certified as a Licensed Technologist OAA may carry forward a maximum of seven self-directed hours and four hours of core learning. This policy does not apply to those designated as a Technologist OAAAS.
Members are personally responsible for keeping track of their Continuing Education hours in their member file on the OAA web site.
