Performance and Practice Standards
Performance and Practice Standards is an enhanced component of the Professional Excellence Program.
Existing practice and performance standards are outlined in Regulation 27 under the Architects Act. Under the Professional Excellence Program these standards will be expanded to create specific standards for Ontario architects that cover a wide range of topics applicable to today’s profession.
The process for developing new standards will begin with the creation of Practice Bulletins. Feedback on the Bulletins will be monitored in order to revise and refine the information to create final practice and performance standards.
In December 2000 the first professional practice standards Bulletins were published and distributed to OAA members. They include:
- Ontario Building Code (OBC) - OBC Data on Drawings
- Ontario Building Code (OBC) - General Review - Broadscope Checklist
Practice standards define and establish a level of professionalism which must be met by all Ontario architects. OAA practice standards enable the following objectives of the Professional Excellence Program to be met:
- No members fall below the standards of service and professionalism set by the profession;
- Those in danger of falling below acceptable levels are identified as early as possible and are quickly and efficiently provided with remedial measures; and
- Members who are unwilling or unable to meet the standards are removed and lose the right to practice.
